Your lead form is asking for too much

Name, one contact method, the vehicle. Everything past that is the store asking a stranger to do work first.

Count the fields on your website's main lead form. If the answer is more than four, somebody added them one at a time over three years and nobody ever took one away.

Every field is a small negotiation. The shopper is deciding whether the answer they get back is worth what you are asking for.

What you actually need

Name. One contact method. The vehicle. That is a lead.

Everything past that is the store asking a stranger to do work before the store has done any.

  • Phone and email both required — a shopper who prefers text will abandon rather than hand a phone number to a form they don't trust yet. Ask for one, make the other optional.
  • Trade-in details on the first form — year, make, model, mileage, condition. That is five fields to get a number they already suspect will be low. Ask once a conversation is running.
  • Best time to contact — nobody honours it. Delete it.
  • Comments box — harmless, occasionally useful. Keep it optional and put it last.

A short form does not lower lead quality. It raises lead volume and moves the qualifying to a human, which is where it belonged.

The part that matters more than the form

What happens in the next ten minutes. A four-field form feeding a queue nobody watches on a Friday evening is worse than a nine-field form with a person behind it. If your response coverage has gaps, shortening the form just produces more leads to ignore — why your 5:40pm Friday lead never gets called back covers where those gaps usually sit.

Fix the response first. Then shorten the form, because now the extra volume lands somewhere.

Test it on yourself

On your own phone, on mobile data, not office wifi. Submit a real lead on your own site. Count the taps. Notice whether the keyboard covers the submit button, whether the phone field brings up a number pad, and whether the confirmation screen says anything useful or just "thank you".

Then wait, and time how long it takes your store to reply. Most owners come out of that exercise having decided the form was the smaller problem.
